Global event continues to prioritize disability inclusion for athletes and fans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 3, 2021) – The Birmingham Organizing Committee for The World Games 2022 today announced that former United States Army Sergeant and Birmingham native Noah Galloway has joined The World Games 2022 as an Honorary Co-Chair.

The committee also announced that Drummond Company, Inc. has been named Presenting Sponsor of The World Games 2022’s Disability Inclusion initiative. Drummond Company is a family-owned private company with global mining operations in coal and coal products, as well as oil, gas, and real estate ventures. The World Games Disability and Inclusion Program aims to present an event that embraces inclusivity and accessibility for athletes and fans alike, and establish a legacy of disability inclusion in multi-sports events. Noah Galloway will serve as the initiative’s official spokesperson.

The World Games 2022 (TWG2022), an international multi-sport event organized with the support of the International Olympic Committee, will hold its 11th edition in Birmingham from July 7-17, 2022. An anticipated 3,600 athletes will participate in more than 30 different sports throughout The World Games 2022.

An embodiment of the American spirit, Noah Galloway enlisted in the United States Army following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He became a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion of the 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was severely injured during an IED attack in Yusafiah, Iraq on December 19, 2005. The attack led to Galloway losing his left arm above the elbow and his left leg above the knee.

After returning from deployment, Galloway participated in fitness competitions across the country, began a career as a motivational speaker and appeared on the cover of Men’s Health Magazine in 2014, earning the title of ‘The Ultimate Guy.’ His “No Excuses Charitable Fund” raises money and awareness for organizations that support fitness, wellness and inspiring others to enlist healthy habits in their daily lives.

He also appeared on multiple reality competition TV shows, placing third on the 20th season of Dancing with the Stars and leading his team to victory on the first season of Fox’s American Grit.

“I’m honored to be joining The World Games 2022 family,” Galloway said. “This event represents an incredible opportunity for Birmingham, but it’s much more than that. The commitment The World Games 2022 has made to disability inclusion is something to be extremely proud of. I’m excited to witness the athleticism and dedication of these athletes from around the world. “

In his role with The World Games 2022, Galloway will participate in several events, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. He will also represent, support, and promote the message and mission of The World Games 2022.

“Noah has one of the most incredible stories I’ve ever heard. It’s one of perseverance and dedication and it’s such an honor that he is an Honorary Co-Chair of The World Games 2022,” TWG2022 CEO Nick Sellers said. “His ‘No Excuses’ persona is truly inspiring and the resiliency he’s shown throughout his life represents the spirit of a champion. This is what The World Games 2022 is all about.”

For athletes with a disability, The World Games 2022 will ensure that athlete’s experiences, communications and services are inclusive and accessible, encouraging a universal design framework. Initiatives for fans in attendance with a disability will include accessibility-driven spectator services, on-site accessibility services, and customer service hotline via the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability.

As the Presenting Sponsor of The World Games 2022 Disability Inclusion Program, Drummond Company is proud to support The World Games 2022 by partnering with the Lakeshore Foundation to provide a fully integrated disability and inclusion program.

Founded almost a century ago, Drummond is a family company that maintains family values. From its local roots in Walker County Alabama to a global company with operations in Colombia, South America, building stronger communities and generating a positive impact is part of Drummond’s pledge to its employees and neighbors. Drummond’s Corporate Social Responsibility programs contribute to the well-being of its communities by sponsoring college scholarships, funding job-training centers, creating literacy initiatives, establishing health clinics, school construction, and advancing the missions of many local charitable organizations.

Drummond CEO Richard Mullen said sponsoring the Disability Inclusion Program is a natural fit for his company to join The World Games 2022 team.

“A great deal of resiliency is required to survive over 85 years in a global market as a coal mining company,” Drummond said. “It’s the same kind of spirit and commitment that is required of these athletes to compete at this level and that is needed to champion disability inclusion.”
